The meaning of green varies with the context of a scene. One article states "Green has an association with renewal, growth, hope, and rebirth, but green also stands for both a lack of experience and need for growth." What is most interesting about this scene is the fact that it leads to Travis on the road to recovery. The doctor finds Walt's business card and is able to reunite the brothers after 4 years. This scene is pivotal to the plot of the movie and allows Travis to explore and rediscover himself as he makes his way back into society. If it were not for the doctor calling Walt, Travis would not have been reunited with his son and wife.
American filmmaker and actor David Lynch discussed the acting qualities of Harry Dean Stanton in a documentary titled Partly Fiction, that highlights the career of Stanton. Lynch states "He’s got this innocence and naturalness that’s really rare. [---] And what he does in between the lines is incredible. A lot of people, you can sort of see them, they’re not really listening. They’re not within the thing in between the lines. Not Harry." Within these films, dialogue is not always necessary, and it is often what's in-between the lines that reveal key information. The combined efforts of lighting and acting are what make this movie an incredible story about the American Dream and self-realization.
